For generations, people have used its dried leaves, known as Olai, as writing material for ancient Tamil literature and manuscripts, which has helped preserve the language's rich history. The tree offers key food products, including the refreshing Nungu fruit and natural sweeteners like Karuppatti, or palm jaggery, which are essential to traditional Tamil cooking and medicine. Its strong trunk and leaves have historically played a crucial role in building houses and crafting traditional items, making it a vital part of life for rural Tamil communities.

The decline of the Palmyra palm, or Panai Maram, is a serious issue tied to economic changes and modernization.
The market for its traditional products has shrunk. Inexpensive white sugar has replaced healthier palm sweeteners like Karuppatti, making the labor-intensive tapping process unprofitable. Trees are being illegally cut down for cheap firewood, particularly for brick kilns, due to decreased demand. Young people are moving away from the challenging and low-paying work of palm climbing, leading to a loss of traditional skills in tapping for products like Nungu and Pathaneer.
